The Black Bean Brownie is REAL, but is it good?

I've been curious as hell to try a black bean brownie ever since reading about it over at Happy Herbivore.  I followed the recipe and went with the 1/4 cup of sugar option (obviously stops weight loss in its tracks, but this is a fun less deadly & rare low fat treat).  I used brown sugar because its what I had on hand.  I actually made it w/o a blender or food processor and I don't recommend that route!  (exhausting: I haven't unpacked our kitchen, yet).  I'd also probably try them again w/o the added sugar or just replace the agave (you'd have to add some liquid) for the sugar since heated agave is now the devil.  (think HFCS on steroids)  Mixing all the sugars and powders together (slicing the bananas extra thin) first, to make a nice coca crack syrup to add the beans to was helpful.  I added the beans a little bit at a time to facilitate getting it all mixed up.  I smashed the heck out of the beans first, too.  I have to admit they are GOOD.

Makes me wonder what other health foods a cup of sugar could turn into dessert, probably all of them.  I'll stick to the Health Starts Here brownies for now when I'm in brownie mode, but I'm glad I tried these.  THANK YOU LINDSAY!  (http://happyherbivore.com)  They were fun, interesting and just plain strange, although super tasty!

Two final tips.  First omit the non stick spray.  That stuff is pure fat and these don't stick at all (if they did I'd line with parchment paper or use a silicon tray.  Second, eat them pretty quickly while warm.  They sort of turn to a watery goo in the fridge if you make them late at night and toss them right in there before letting them cool.  They weren't as good the next day, but still enjoyable!

These bean brownies look very interesting! I've never heard of them before. The Health Starts Here brownies look good too. Do you have a recipe? I love the sound of the short and healthy ingredient list.

The black bean brownie recipe is over on Happyherbivore.com I don't have a recipe for the Health Starts Here brownies, but if you get them all the ingredients are on the back and you can just sort of wing it. We also get vegan brownie mixes and I sift out all the fatty chocolate chips and use apple sauce instead of fat and they are great low fat treats, though high in sugar.

I should try these. Healthier vegan desserts would help me not turn into a hippopotamus.

I was too! But its kind of got me convinced you could put sugar on dog poo and it'd taste good. It just goes to show that if someone is having trouble enjoying starches in the beginning a little sugar on the surface of the food can really help get the good stuff in your belly.

Did you try Chef AJ's blk bean brownies at Rip's talk? They were amazing and date sweetened. Much healthier than using sugar or agave.

We wanted too, but never saw the foil come off of them! Kristin was hovering around them, but AJ took off with them! Dates are amazingly smarter!
